And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.’ And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.” Mark 3:32-35
Did you know that you are related to Jesus? As a believer in Christ, you are a daughter of the King! How cool is that? This passage reveals to us that as Christians we are invited to be a part of God’s family. I’ve been in many churches where they address each other as “Sister” or “Brother.” My name is Sister Annie! I love that!
Jesus is telling us that those who desire to know Him, sit with Him, and learn how to live His way, are called His brother and sister. “For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:35). I imagine the people in the room that day were ordinary people like you and me. They had jobs, chores, maybe even homework, afternoon sport activities, rehearsals, and family responsibilities. Yet, despite the busyness of their day, they sat with Jesus. They listened and became His followers. Jesus could see that their hearts were turned to Him—and He called them family.
Galatians 3:26 says, “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Through faith, we become God’s children—daughter’s of the King. And if we want to know what the will of God is, we have to take the time to sit with Jesus. It’s as simple as that. So, Sister ___________ (insert your name), how are you going to sit with Jesus today?
